Volkswagen is recalling more than 114,000 cars from the United States

The American division of German Volkswagen is recalling more than 114,000 vehicles due to the risk of exploding airbags, according to a statement posted on the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

In particular, due to the decomposition of explosive materials, the driver's airbag can explode. This can be caused by prolonged exposure to high humidity and temperature and can lead to the scattering of sharp metal fragments, which poses a serious threat to the health and life of people in the car. It is about the equipment manufactured by the Takata company.

The new recall is a continuation of a 2020 settlement between Volkswagen and NHTSA that led to a recall of the 2012-2016 Volkswagen Beetle with the same component.

It's recalling 2017-2019 Beetle models, including convertibles and some Passat models. Dealers will replace the driver's airbag modules in the recalled vehicles for free. Takata filed for bankruptcy in 2017 amid a US recall of 42 million vehicles. after facing billions of dollars in liabilities.
