French President Emmanuel Macron, in a conversation with the newly elected US President Donald Trump, urged him to get "real concessions" from Russia on the issue of Ukraine, writes The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), citing sources.
During the 25-minute phone call, Macron urged Trump to guarantee that any diplomatic process with Russia over Ukraine would lead to real concessions from the Kremlin, people with knowledge of the call said. Trump's reaction to such a proposal was not reported.
According to the WSJ, there are currently behind-the-scenes discussions in the EU about how to continue funding Ukraine if the US, under the Trump administration, cuts its contribution to support Kiev.
The newspaper clarifies that since February 2022, the United States has provided $106 billion to the government of Ukraine, including $70 billion as of September 2024. In turn, the EU sent 133 billion dollars in military, financial and humanitarian aid. Other countries, such as Britain and Norway, have also invested billions of dollars.
