Taycan is on the verge of extinction. Porsche may end electric car production by 2030

Porsche may completely stop production of the electric Taycan no later than 2030, reports German business magazine Wirtschaftswoche, citing sources inside the company.

According to the newspaper, Porsche considered several options for the future fate of the model. These included moving production of the Taycan from the Stuttgart plant to Leipzig, where capacity utilization was significantly lower than expected, as well as the near-immediate cessation of production.

As a result, the company has reportedly reached an agreement with the manufacturing board to phase out the Taycan over several years, but this decision has not yet been finalized. The electric car is expected to continue to be produced in Stuttgart before the end of production.

In July, the CEO of Porsche, Michael Leiters, avoided directly answering the question about the model's future. "In the short term, we do not plan to stop the production of Taycan. We have invested a lot in this model and we want to see how the demand will develop," he said.

Taycan sales have indeed declined sharply since the 2023 peak. At that time, Porsche sold 40,960 cars, and in 2025, only 16,339. In the first half of 2026, 6,219 Taycans were sold. Due to the drop in demand, the production of the model was stopped several times.

Introduced in 2019, the Taycan became Porsche's first fully electric car. At the same time, the company's original plans entailed much more extensive electrification; In 2022, the then chairman of Porsche, Oliver Blume, announced that up to 80% of the brand's sales could be accounted for by electric vehicles by 2030. These plans have not yet been implemented.

At the same time, judging by everything, Porsche is not going to abandon electric sports sedans as a class. The possible successor of Taycan can become a model that will be integrated with the next generation of Panamera. Such a strategy is already used in the case of the Macan and Cayenne, for which there are versions with internal combustion engines and fully electric modifications.

Moving production of the potential successor to Leipzig would allow Porsche to consolidate sedan production and increase production efficiency. The plant already produces the Panamera and the electric Macan on the same line, and the line can produce cars with gasoline, hybrid and electric powertrains.

Against the background of problems with electric cars, Porsche also suffered significant financial losses. the company has already written off 1.8 billion euros due to delays in the development of new platforms.
