Colombia is counting the damage after the strongest earthquake of the XXI century. the number of victims has increased



The death toll from the 7.4-magnitude earthquake in Colombia has reached 294, and another 3,935 people have been injured, Colombia's National Disaster Risk Management Service (UNGRD) said.

As of 6:30 am on August 15, the consequences of the earthquake were recorded in 15 departments and 448 municipalities. 54,008 families or 115,461 people were affected. Another 320 people are considered missing, 353 people were rescued.

The infrastructure was the most affected. 14,493 residential houses were destroyed, and another 81,506 were damaged. 66 buildings completely collapsed.

Damages were also recorded in 241 medical institutions, 2,612 educational and 3,621 public centers. The earthquake damaged 298 roads, 59 water supply systems, 44 automobile and five pedestrian bridges, as well as five airports.

Animals were also affected. 188 animals were saved, another 578 were damaged or suffered from the effects of the elements.

The earthquake occurred on August 10 in the San Jose del Palmar region of the Choco department. According to the geological service of Colombia, it became the most powerful earthquake of the 21st century in the country.

Rescue and rehabilitation work is ongoing, UNGRD is coordinating the delivery of aid to the affected regions.
