Moroccan security forces have prevented hundreds of migrants from illegally crossing the border of the autonomous city of Ceuta, EFE reports, citing sources.
According to the agency, the incident took place in the mountainous area. The security forces dispersed the migrants who were still in the area. Earlier, there were reports on social networks about preparations for another massive illegal border crossing to Ceuta. Therefore, Morocco and Spain have decided to strengthen security measures at the border of the city.
In late July, tens of thousands of illegal immigrants managed to reach Ceuta by swimming and walking, bypassing the coastal barrier that separates the city from Morocco.
In the conditions of the crisis, Madrid decided to deploy the military to ensure security in the city. It is believed that most of the illegal immigrants have already returned to Morocco, but according to Spanish authorities, there may still be as many as 5,000 migrants in the city.
