Abelardo de la Espriella has officially assumed the post of president of Colombia after winning the June elections. In his inauguration speech, the 48-year-old politician promised to intensify the fight against armed groups, drug cartels and illegal drug trafficking.
He noted that the restoration of security will be one of the priority tasks of his administration. About three weeks ago, de la Espriela announced that he had information about an assassination attempt on him, which was planned to take place before the inauguration ceremony. The details of the alleged conspiracy have not been disclosed.
Abelardo de la Espriela is a lawyer and former attorney known for his tough-on-crime statements. During the election, he advocated tougher policies against illegal armed groups and drug trafficking.
