25 states of MN filed a lawsuit against the administration of President Donald Trump, challenging the legality of the new customs duties. According to the Associated Press, the plaintiffs claim that the administration is trying to reinstate import tariffs that the Supreme Court previously ruled illegal.
Last month, the United States imposed double-digit tariffs on 59 countries and the European Union, arguing that those countries were not doing enough to prevent the importation of goods produced with forced labor.
New York Attorney General Leticia James said that after losing in the Supreme Court, the administration is again trying to illegally increase the tax burden on American families and businesses.
The Trump administration is justifying the new tariffs under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, which allows the president to impose tariffs on countries the US says are violating fair trade rules.
The White House says the new measures comply with the law and are aimed at preventing actions that harm American trade and workers.
This is already the third lawsuit against Trump's customs policy. Earlier, American small business representatives also submitted similar claims.
