The Milli Mejlis of Azerbaijan criticized the H.R. discussed in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US House of Representatives on July 22. Amendments proposed in the framework of Bill 9087 regarding Azerbaijan.
According to the Mejlis statement, these initiatives are an attempt to exert political pressure on Azerbaijan and are connected with the activities of Armenian lobby circles.
Baku claims that such steps can negatively affect the ongoing peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The Parliament of Azerbaijan particularly referred to the wordings of "prisoners of war" and "political prisoners" applied to Armenian persons convicted in Azerbaijan.
According to Baku's statement, these persons were held accountable for the crimes provided for by the legislation of Azerbaijan and within the framework of international law.
The Milli Mejlis called on the US congressmen to respect the sovereignty of Azerbaijan and not to take decisions that, according to the Azerbaijani side, could hinder the establishment of peace in the South Caucasus.
