European Union countries have approved a deal with Britain that allows British defense companies to sign contracts to produce weapons for Ukraine as part of a €90 billion military funding programme. This was announced in the statement of the EU Council.
"EU countries today approved the agreement on the UK's participation in the 90 billion euro European funding program for Ukraine to meet Ukraine's urgent needs in 2026-2027, so that it can continue the war with Russia," the document states. This agreement was signed on July 13.
As previously explained by the European Commission, in order for the British defense industry to sign military contracts from Ukraine under this EU program, the UK government must pay part of the contract value from the UK budget. In order to receive each tranche of funding under this program, Kyiv is required to submit all arms contracts it intends to pay within that tranche to the European Commission for approval. Only after the verification of the contracts, the European Commission allocates the next part of the funds.
