The mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, admitted that the city does not have the authority to detain Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on the warrant of the International Criminal Court (ICC). "It is clear that we do not have the legal authority to enforce this International Criminal Court warrant.
However, the federal government has that authority and I urge them to join the ICC and enforce it," Mamdani said in a video posted by X. The mayor of New York previously said that the city's legal department is exploring options to arrest Netanyahu on an ICC warrant if he attends the United Nations General Assembly in September.
In response, US President Donald Trump stressed that no one, under any circumstances, will be able to detain Netanyahu during his visits to the US. In November 2024, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Galant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity related to the Gaza conflict. Israel and the United States do not recognize the court's jurisdiction.
