Iranian authorities have allowed Dena Carrari, a US citizen accused of espionage, to leave the Islamic Republic, according to his lawyer Jared Genser.

"I am pleased to announce that my client Dena Karari, who has been detained in Iran since December 2024 on false charges, is now free," he wrote in an email.

Genser clarified that Carrari is "returning to the United States". The New York Times, citing Genser, noted that Karari was accused of "espionage and collaboration with a hostile state" in the Islamic Republic.

According to the newspaper, he has both US and Iranian citizenship. US President Donald Trump previously announced that Iran, as a "gesture of goodwill", allowed a detained US citizen to leave the Islamic Republic in 2024.

He did not mention his name, but thanked the Iranian side.
