Criminal cases against Trump will be closed

The US Department of Justice has begun discussing how to close two federal criminal cases against Donald Trump. It adheres to a policy of not bringing criminal charges against sitting presidents.

Trump was charged in federal court in Washington in connection with the 2020 with his alleged role in trying to overturn the results.

In another federal case in Florida, he is charged with 40 felonies related to his possession of classified government documents. Trump has already promised to fire Jack Smith, the special prosecutor handling both cases.

After becoming president, Trump will be able to hire a new attorney general, a department head who will oversee those cases and have the power to stop them.
