"Stop COP 29". Azerbaijani activists protested

"Stop COP 29" - call the Azerbaijani opposition activists, trying to draw the attention of the international community to the problem of human rights in Azerbaijan. A protest demonstration took place in Germany on the eve of the UN Climate Summit in Baku. This is reported by "Geghard" scientific analysisthe fundClimate change, which can have catastrophic consequences for all mankind, is one of the issues that concern the whole world. It has also become one of the most important components of the political agenda of global leaders.

There are states whose leaders are trying to "catch" the moment and enter the climate agenda, turning it into a tool for their own PR (recognizability), diverting the public's attention from their own crimes, violence and aggressive actions. Thus, Azerbaijan will adopt the COP on November 11, 2024. 29 the 11th climate summit, which will be attended by thousands of representatives from different countries. This annual series of events aims to find solutions to pressing climate issues. The selection of Baku as the host country for a major climate event held under the auspices of the United Nations has caused a lot of criticism.

Human rights organizations, international media, and many political figures have expressed their bewilderment about this. According to them, how can a state be trusted to hold such a summit, whose leadership subjected Artsakh to ethnic cleansing, persecutes oppositionists, closes the media in the country, restricts freedom of speech. In addition to human rights problems, there are also serious environmental problems in Azerbaijan.

There are regular protests in the country against soil, air, and water pollution, but the country's authorities respond to them by using violence against the residents. The opposition activists living outside Azerbaijan, who have been subjected to political persecution, are also dissatisfied with the situation. They noted that there are many political prisoners in the prisons of Azerbaijan, the human rights situation is alarming, and the freedom of speech and assembly is limited.

Currently, there are 347 political prisoners in Azerbaijani prisons, 30 of them are journalists. The participants of the demonstration noted that even after receiving the right to hold the summit, no positive changes were recorded in the country. Moreover, the leadership of Azerbaijan continues to arrest, torture and persecute a larger number of opponents. The participants of the demonstration also appealed to the leaders of the countries participating in COP 29 and parliaments, as well as the UN and the European Parliament, asking them to support the release of political prisoners in Azerbaijan.

The summit to be held in Baku is a mockery of climate problems. it is aimed at maintaining Aliyev's reputation through petrodollars and concealing Baku's criminal activities.
