Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Jolt Semien has resigned as head of the Christian Democratic People's Party (CDPP) after losing the parliamentary elections. Part of the ruling coalition with Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's Fidesz-Hungarian Civil Union, it lost a majority of parliamentary seats to the opposition Tisa party.
Semien took responsibility for this defeat and submitted his resignation. However, "it was unanimously rejected by a secret vote at the session of the CDPP presidency", he wrote on Facebook.
Semien said he agreed to remain CDPP chairman during the "generation change and renewal of the party". "I will carry out this order," assured the politician.
Fidesz now faces similar challenges, holding a presidency session on April 28 and a national congress a few months later. These events will determine the party's future strategy and whether Orbán will remain its leader.
