The current president of Lithuania has won the elections of the head of state


The incumbent president of Lithuania, Gitanas Nauseda, won the second round of the head of state elections with 74.43 percent of the votes. This is evidenced by the data of the main election commission of the country. According to the results of counting the votes of all 1,895 polling stations, his rival, the Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrida Shimonite, received 24.06 percent of the votes. According to the data of the LRT national radio of Lithuania, the turnout of voters in the second round was 49.6 percent.
Shimonite has already accepted his defeat and congratulated Nauseda on being elected president for the second term. "I would like to congratulate the elected president of Lithuania," his words were quoted by LRT. Shimonite added that he will return to work as prime minister.
On May 12, the first round of presidential elections took place in Lithuania, Nauseda collected 44.19 percent of votes, Shimonite - 19.78. In the first round, eight candidates claimed the position of president. Since none of them got 50 percent, the second round was scheduled for May 26.
During the previous presidential elections in 2019 Nauseda and Shimonite already went to the second round. The head of Lithuania is elected directly by secret ballot for a five-year term. Candidates have an age limit of 40 years, as well as a requirement to be a citizen of Lithuania by origin and to have lived in the country for the last three years.
