French President Emmanuel Macron announced the possibility of coordinating the issue of navigation safety in the Strait of Hormuz with the permanent members of the UN Security Council.
"This afternoon I explained to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres that France intends to check the response of key partners, in particular the permanent members of the Security Council, on the advisability of creating a mechanism to implement our plans on the Strait of Hormuz within the UN," he said at a press conference after the EU summit in Brussels.
He clarified that he informed his colleagues about this initiative and discussed it with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. "Thus, we have started preliminary operations and in the coming days we will see if they have a chance of success," Macron said.
He had previously stated that France was ready to participate in the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but refused to take measures to open it until the end of the military conflict between the US, Israel and Iran.
