Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has proposed a one-month ceasefire with Israel, promising to disarm the Shia militia "Hezbollah" during that period. The Arabic newspaper "Asharq al-Awsat" reports this, referring to diplomatic sources in Beirut.
According to the newspaper, the head of state conveyed his peace proposal to the Israeli side through the US ambassador to Lebanon, Michael Issa. Aoun stated that the ceasefire is necessary so that the Lebanese army can complete the disarmament program of all illegal paramilitary groups approved by the government.
He emphasized that it is impossible to carry out such an operation in military conditions. Aoun insisted that the implementation of the state arms monopoly cannot be ended amid the escalation of Israeli operations on land, air and sea, the newspaper reported, citing sources.
