Indonesia tightens airport security due to Nipah virus

Indonesia has strengthened security measures at 36 airports due to the Nipah virus, and 198 hospitals in the country are ready for an outbreak, the Indonesian Ministry of Health told RIA Novosti. "The Ministry of Health has issued a circular about the heightened alarm of Nipah virus.

The following measures have been taken: security measures have been strengthened at entry points (36 airports, 156 seaports and 11 land border crossings) and 198 hospitals are ready for possible treatment of cases, the ministry said.

The Ministry of Health clarified that a rapid disease risk assessment was carried out with the participation of inter-sectoral agencies (including veterinary services). "The assessment showed that the risk of Nipah virus spreading in Indonesia is low," the Ministry of Health concluded.
