CBC: Canada is afraid to help Cuba because of the US

The Canadian government does not provide aid to Cuba, which is under an economic blockade by the United States, out of fear of Washington, said Canadian CBC TV reporter Kevin Maiman.

"As one of the few Western countries to have maintained friendly relations with Cuba since the Cuban Revolution in 1953-1959, and to do so in the face of a long US embargo, Canada now finds itself in a situation where intensifying aid efforts to the island could damage its already strained relationship with the United States," he said.

Leaders of the opposition parties in the Canadian Parliament have long heard calls to provide aid to Havana with food, fuel and medicine. However, the government only announced that a package of humanitarian aid could be sent to Cuba, without specifying a specific date.

This package, as Maiman notes, most likely will not include fuel supplies, because "Canadian oil belongs to private companies" that "will not risk the economic consequences of the Trump administration."
