The Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, warned about the "prospects of a completely real financial collapse" of the world organization.
In an interview with "La Repubblica" newspaper, he said that in the absence of reforming the financing rules, a "structural crisis" will be created.
"I emphasized that this is not an ordinary cash flow issue. I have made it clear to member states that while the UN has successfully overcome periods of annual payment delays in the past, the current situation is different," he said, responding to a question about a recent "letter to ambassadors" he sent, which talks about the "imminence of a successful financial collapse."
He reminded that non-fulfillment of payments, with which a significant part of the approved regular budget is financed, leads to a structural crisis.
