About 50,000 convicts were released in the United Kingdom within a year as part of the program to combat the burden of the penal system, reports The Times newspaper, referring to the data of the Ministry of Justice of the kingdom.
From September 2024, a program was started in the country, according to which convicts, detainees who have served 40% of their sentence, are released step by step due to the lack of space in the prison. It comes after the number of prisoners in the prison system in England and Wales reached a record 88,521.
According to the Ministry, from September 10, 2024 to September 30, 2025, 48,931 people were released under this program. Early release decisions for 264 people were revoked due to violation of conditions, but these people did not return to prisons in time.
According to the Ministry's estimates, thanks to this program, by 2030, the number of convicts in England and Wales will not reach the previously predicted 100,000, but will reach 92,600.
