Former US President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the US Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service (the country's top tax authority), demanding at least $10 billion in damages for leaking his tax returns to the media during his first term in office.
According to the lawsuit, which was published in the electronic database of the court of the Southern District of Florida, the plaintiffs are Donald Trump himself, his sons Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, as well as the Trump Organization. They request the court to recognize that "the defendants knowingly, intentionally or with gross negligence illegally disclosed the confidential information of the plaintiffs' tax returns".
As compensation, the plaintiff is demanding that the defendants pay "at least $10 billion."
The New York Times announced in September 2020 that its reporters had access to more than 20 years of Donald Trump's tax returns. From them, it allegedly followed that in 2016 and 2017 he paid only about 1.5 thousand dollars in income tax.
