The increase in the level of air pollution in Yerevan is mainly due to the fluctuations of the atmospheric inversion layer, the geographical location of the city and cross-border emissions from neighboring countries.
Yerevan Municipality implemented a new digital tool for monitoring and managing air quality in the GIS system. The main goal of the system is to predict changes in air quality based on expected variations in atmospheric layers.
Using the GIS platform, it will already be possible to see in advance which days the inversion layer is expected to fluctuate, which leads to a sharp increase in pollution. This will make it possible to plan in advance and apply certain restrictions, thanks to which the emissions generated in the city will be minimized and the impact of pollution will be mitigated.
During the procedural session, Mayor Avinyan emphasized that the new technological solution will enable citizens to be more aware of air quality and plan their time outside accordingly, avoiding possible health problems.
