US President Donald Trump intends to ban Russia and China from extracting rare earth resources in the territory of the island as part of the framework agreement on Greenland, reports The New York Times (NYT), citing sources.
According to the newspaper, the restrictions will apply to all countries that are not part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, but a separate emphasis will be placed on Russia and China.
Earlier, the European newspaper Politico reported that the framework agreement reached by President Trump and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte may include the creation of a special authority to control resource extraction in Greenland. According to him, that structure will control the "exploration rights" of mines on the island.
