US President Donald Trump has suggested that Washington should put NATO allies to the test and try to involve them in protecting the border with Mexico from illegal migrants.
"Maybe we need to put NATO to the test. invoke Article 5 and force NATO to come and protect our southern border from illegal immigration, thus freeing up large numbers of border guards to do other things," Trump wrote on the Truth Social social network.
The fifth article of the North Atlantic Treaty envisages a collective response in the event of an armed attack against one or more NATO member states.
