NYT. Denmark may cede control of part of Greenland to the US for military bases

The US deal on Greenland may imply Washington's control over small areas of the island, The New York Times (NYT) reported, citing sources.

According to their information, on the eve of the announcement made by US President Donald Trump on January 21 about the existence of the outlines of the future agreement, the military officials of the NATO countries discussed the possibility of going to a "compromise" in which Denmark would grant the United States sovereignty over small areas of Greenland where the US could build military bases. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte spoke in favor of this type of agreement, three unnamed officials told the publication.

The paper's sources compared this to British bases in Cyprus, which are considered British overseas territory.

However, NYT notes that it is unknown if this idea became part of the concept announced by Trump.
