Axios. The Greenland deal would preserve Denmark's sovereignty

The draft agreement on Greenland proposed by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte to US President Donald Trump would preserve Denmark's sovereignty over the island but update the terms of a 1951 defense agreement on the island, Axios reported, citing two sources.

"Two sources familiar with Rutte's proposal said it did not include transferring overall sovereignty over Greenland from Denmark to the United States," the article said.

"The plan includes the renewal of the 1951 agreement between the United States and Denmark on the defense of Greenland, which allowed the United States to build military bases on the island and create "defense zones" if NATO deemed it necessary," the portal notes.
