The Iranian side has contacted the US President's special envoy, Stephen Wittkoff, White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt told reporters. "There was an Iranian government official who approached one of US President Donald Trump's closest confidants, Special Representative Wittkoff, in a completely different tone than you heard publicly," Leavitt said.
He added that these contacts were previously reported in the media. "I understand that Stephen Wittkoff will play a very important role in the diplomatic process regarding Iran," the White House press secretary emphasized. In an interview with Fox News, Leavitt also asserted:
"What the Iranian regime says publicly is very different from the messages it sends privately to the United States and the Trump administration." Axios previously reported, citing sources, that Wittkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi discussed the unrest in the Islamic Republic and the possibility of a meeting over the weekend.
