Former Prime Minister of Georgia Garibashvili was sentenced to five years in prison

The former prime minister of Georgia, Irakli Gharibashvili, who was found guilty of money laundering, was sentenced to five years in prison. According to TASS, the General Prosecutor's Office of Georgia informs about this. Let's remind that Gharibashvili was charged under Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Georgia, which refers to money laundering and the acquisition of particularly large amounts of income.

According to the prosecutor's office, Garibashvili, who held the post of Minister of Defense and Prime Minister of Georgia in 2019-2024, was prohibited by Georgian legislation from engaging in business activities or receiving remuneration other than his official salary.

Despite this, he secretly engaged in business and received particularly large amounts of illegally obtained income, the authorities added. During the search of Irakli Gharibashvili's apartment on October 17, a number of material evidences were obtained, including 198 pieces of jewelry, expensive pictures, 50 mobile phones and 119 other electronic devices.

During the same search, 6 million 500 thousand US dollars were also found and confiscated.
