Israel has officially recognized Somaliland as an independent and sovereign state. The corresponding declaration was signed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi.

"Israel plans to immediately expand its relations with the Republic of Somaliland through cooperation in the fields of agriculture, health, technology and economy," the Israeli Prime Minister's Office said.

British Somaliland existed from 1884 to 1960. The territory occupies a strategic position that allows controlling the transition from the Red Sea to the Indian Ocean.
