The United States did not notify the Danish government in advance of the appointment of Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry as the special ambassador of US President Donald Trump for Greenland issues, Axios reports, citing its sources.
According to the publication, in recent months American officials, on the contrary, have convinced the Danish government that the Trump administration has abandoned the idea of annexing Greenland to the United States and that the issue will not be raised again.
During a meeting with Danish and Greenland government officials in early December, the US State Department delegation engaged in constructive dialogue and made no mention of appointing a special envoy or a possible diplomatic escalation over the island.
As Axios' sources noted, the State Department itself was probably not aware of plans to appoint a special presidential envoy for Greenland.
