NBC: Maryland will consider reparations for blacks for years of slavery

In Maryland, a special commission will be created to study possible reparations for years of slavery for black Americans, NBC reports.

State lawmakers were able to override a corresponding veto by Governor Wes Moore, who, as the only black governor in the United States, has long opposed such an initiative.

As NBC explained, Moore believed that "the legacy of slavery has already been sufficiently explored," but Democrats who control both houses of the Maryland Legislature believed that a special committee was needed to study the issue more deeply.

According to the channel, the measures could include official government apologies, monetary compensation, property tax refunds, housing and business incentives, debt forgiveness and free college tuition. Blacks make up 30% of Marylanders.
