US President Donald Trump signed an executive order classifying fentanyl and its main chemical elements as weapons of mass destruction.
"The production and distribution of fentanyl, which is largely carried out by organized crime networks, threatens our national security and promotes lawlessness in our hemisphere and across our borders," Trump's executive order, published by the White House press office, said. "I hereby declare fentanyl illegal and classify its key chemical elements as weapons of mass destruction.
No bomb does what this one does. As far as we know, 200,000 to 300,000 people die because of it every year. Thus, we officially classify fentanyl as a weapon of mass destruction," Trump said.
