New York City authorities have decided to deploy additional law enforcement agencies to ensure security during the Hanukkah holiday following the terrorist attack on Sydney Beach, New York City Mayor Eric Adams said.
"Horrifying images from Australia, where terrorists opened fire on Jews celebrating the start of Hanukkah," he wrote on X.
"We are deploying additional forces to provide security during the Hanukkah celebrations."
The Jewish festival of candles and lights, Hanukkah, is celebrated for eight days, the start of the celebration depending on the Jewish calendar. This year it runs from December 14-22.
On Hanukkah, candles are lit to commemorate the miracle that took place at the opening of the Second Temple in Jerusalem in 1000 BC. After Judas Maccabeus' victory over the forces of Seleucid King Antiochus in 164 AD.
