As many as 100,000 people may be evacuated in Washington due to heavy rains that have caused widespread flooding, ABC reported.

On December 10, Governor Bob Ferguson declared a state of emergency in the region. He also called on the residents to prepare for possible evacuations.

Earlier it was reported that more than 9 million residents in the northwestern states of Idaho, Washington and Oregon could be in flood zones due to heavy rains. According to the National Weather Bureau, these areas will experience an atmospheric river effect, when huge masses of water vapor from the tropics and subtropics are transported to higher latitudes. Up to 200mm of rain has already fallen in some places since Monday, with as much more expected in the coming days. It was noted that, for example, in Washington, the average precipitation in December is 146 mm, and in Oregon, 179 mm.
