Argentina is discussing with Great Britain the easing of restrictions on the export of modern weapons imposed as a result of the Falkland Islands War in 1982, Argentine President Javier Millay said in an interview with The Daily Telegraph.
"World powers cannot act without military power. If the country cannot protect its borders, it is not taken into account in the international context," he said. When Millay was asked directly if negotiations had begun between Argentina and Great Britain on easing British restrictions on arms sales, he answered in the affirmative.
According to the publication, US President Donald Trump's administration is playing a mediating role in these talks, seeing Argentina as "an important barrier against Russia and China in the South Atlantic and Antarctica." The Argentine leader also said he plans to visit the United Kingdom in April or May 2026.
