Turkey became the 2024 the country with the largest fleet size

According to the latest data from the Turkish Shipowners Union, the merchant fleet of Turkish owners grew by 8.2% in 2024, surpassing the global average and making Turkey the fastest growing country for that year. ermenihaber.am informs about this.

The number of ships reached 2,092, and the new conditions caused by the Russian-Ukrainian war in the Black Sea region also stimulated the growth of foreign shipping companies registering in Turkey.

In September 2025, the fleet of Turkish owners increased by another 2.2% year-on-year, ranking 10th in the world.

However, industry representatives warn that this growth cannot be sustained unless modernization of the aging fleet of small cargo ships is started as soon as possible. They emphasize that it is important not to lose the possibility of financing offered by the World Bank after about 70 years.
