Georgia abolished the provisional administration of South Ossetia

The authorities of Georgia have decided to abolish the provisional administration of South Ossetia, the speaker of the parliament Shalva Papuashvili announced.

It refers to the structure that was created during the reign of Mikheil Saakashvili and existed outside the borders of the republic after 2008.

"In agreement with the government, we have decided to abolish the administration of the administrative territorial unit created in the territory of the former autonomous region of South Ossetia," Papuashvili said during the briefing.

After the collapse of the USSR and armed conflict with Georgia, South Ossetia existed as an unrecognized republic in 1992, controlling only a portion of the territory it claimed. A large part of South Ossetia, in particular almost all of Leningrad Region and several villages north of Tskhinvali, remained under Tbilisi's control.
