The Parliament of Georgia is starting work on the new Electoral Code, which will prohibit Georgian citizens living abroad from voting in foreign elections. Speaker of the Parliament of Georgia Shalva Papuashvili announced this during the briefing.
According to Papuashvili, Georgian citizens living abroad will be able to participate in the elections only by returning to their homeland and voting in their place of residence.
"The parliamentary elections of 2024 clearly showed how open and hard informational and political pressure can be on voters from abroad.
In this regard, the risks of pressure increase against non-permanent resident citizens, i.e. Georgian citizens living abroad who are under political influence in a foreign environment and jurisdiction.
According to the head of the Parliament of Georgia, similar rules also apply in Armenia, Ireland, Israel and Malta.
According to the data of the Central Electoral Commission, almost 96,000 Georgian citizens have registered abroad for the 2024 parliamentary elections.
