German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier believes that the current threat to democracy in Germany has not been as serious as it has been since the country's reunification. He made the announcement in Berlin on November 9, when Germany marks the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and also remembers the victims of the 1938 Jewish pogroms.

"In the history of our united country, democracy and freedom have never been subjected to such attacks," the head of state said. He mentioned Russia as one of the threats.

"And now the threat comes from right-wing extremist forces that attack our democracy and enjoy the approval of the population," Steinmeier said.
