Nuclear risks in the world are already alarmingly high, and countries should avoid any action that could lead to an escalation of tensions with catastrophic consequences, said Farhan Haq, the Deputy Spokesman of the UN Secretary General, at a briefing, commenting on the announcement of the resumption of nuclear tests by US President Donald Trump.
"The Secretary-General has been saying for some time that the current nuclear risks are alarmingly high and that actions that could lead to miscalculation or escalation with catastrophic consequences must be avoided," Haq said. He recalled "the devastating legacy of more than 2,000 nuclear weapons tests conducted over the past 80 years."
Trump previously said he had ordered the Pentagon to immediately resume nuclear weapons testing. He did not elaborate on what exactly that meant or whether it included detonating nuclear warheads.
