Armenia will shorten the journey to the Iranian border by about 3 hours

Armenia plans to shorten the journey to the Iranian border by almost 3 hours. This will become possible after the completion of the construction of roads and tunnels in the Syunik marz within the framework of the "North-South" project. During the round table dedicated to the results of the logistics route "Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Armenia" Karen Badalyan, Deputy Director of the Road DepartmentSputnik Armeniaexplained that the fourth part of the "North-South" project is being implemented in Syunik region and is divided into three lots. It is planned to build a total of 32 km of road from the border of Iran (Agarak) to Qajara.

The project envisages the construction of 5 junctions, 2 new tunnels and 15 new bridges. The construction of this section is planned to be completed by 2027. The second lot is the 7.2 km long Kajaran new tunnel and the adjacent 4 km road. This will ease the load on the Meghri mountain pass (located at 2535 m above sea level), which will significantly improve the level of road safety, as well as avoid the existing difficulties related to the provision of access.

"As a result, the length of the currently used winding road in Adryunk will be reduced by 14 km, and the average speed of vehicles will increase from 50 km/h to 80 km/h. The time spent on the road will be reduced by 40 minutes," explained Badalyan.
