The European Court of Human Rights obliged Russia to pay 253 million euros to Georgia

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ruled that Russia should pay more than 253 million euros for human rights violations due to the strengthening of the demarcation line after the 2008 war.

"Georgia against Russia (IV) has made a decision in April 2024, and today it has clarified the amount of compensation.

The ECtHR reminded that he confirmed the systematic nature of the violations of the European Convention on Human Rights by Russia. These include extremely use of force, torture and ill-treatment, illegal arrest, freedom of movement, access to homes, lands and families, as well as a ban on education in Georgian.

Compensation were given more than 29 thousand victims.

The ECHR also noted that the Council of Ministers of the Council of Europe continues to monitor the decisions of the court on Russia. According to Article 46 (Mandatory Power of Decisions), Russia must fulfill decisions on the facts before September 16, 2002, on the day it stopped being a party to the European Convention on Human Rights.

However, the Russian authorities have repeatedly stated that they will not fulfill the ECHR decisions after March 16, 2022.

The ECHR's decision was commented at the Georgian Ministry of Justice. The department congratulated the Georgian people on the historical victory, calling the decision to a logical continuation of Georgia's historical cases against Russia.
