Spain calls for a stop to arms exports to Israel

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called on the international community to stop arms exports to Israel as soon as possible due to the escalating situation in the Middle East. “I think that in light of everything that is happening in the Middle East, it is necessary for the international community to stop exporting weapons to the Israeli government,” he said at a press conference after meeting Pope Francis at the Vatican.

According to the prime minister, the Spanish government has from the very beginning adhered to the position of “not making one or another contribution to the escalation of violence and war” and has not exported a single type of weapon or military material to Israel since October 7, 2023. In addition, Sanchez reiterated his "strongly condemn any type of violation or attack on international humanitarian law." The Prime Minister expressed particular concern about Israeli shelling of the headquarters of the UN Interim Force peacekeepers in Lebanon.

On Thursday, the press service of the UN Interim Force in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) said that the headquarters and a number of observation posts of peacekeepers in southern Lebanon are under systematic Israeli shelling, and several peacekeepers were injured. Israel has been conducting a ground operation against the forces since October 1. Hezbollah" in southern Lebanon and continues aerial bombing of the neighboring country, where more than 2 thousand people have already died, including leaders of the Shiite movement, and more than 1 million people have become refugees. Despite losses, including in command personnel, Hezbollah is conducting ground battles and does not stop rocket attacks on Israeli territory.
The main goal of the military campaign in Israel is to create conditions for the return of 60 thousand residents of the north who were evacuated due to the shelling launched by Hezbollah a year ago in support of the Palestinian movement Hamas.
