South Korea's president disagrees that martial law has failed

The President of the Republic of Korea, Yun Seok-yeol, said that the martial law he declared has not been lifted, but it was originally planned to be temporary. He spoke about this during the hearing at the Constitutional Court.

"This is not a failed martial law, it ended a little earlier than expected. The National Assembly demanded it be lifted and I ordered the military to leave," Yoon Seok Yeol said.

"In any case, the martial law hardly lasted more than a day, it was due to the emergency situation created in the country, the crisis situation caused by the dictatorship of the parliament," he continued. Previously, the head of state had already announced that he had introduced martial law in order to testify about the crisis in the country.

"Since the decree was symbolic, there was no way to implement it," he continued. The martial law decree included a clause banning all political activity, including parliamentary activity.

The National Assembly is constitutionally empowered to lift martial law, so it was suggested that the decree was unconstitutional.
