US President Donald Trump has appointed Andrew Puzder, who served as the CEO of Carl's Jr. and Hardee's fast food chains, as ambassador to the European Union, The New York Times reports.

Trump described the 74-year-old Puzder as a successful lawyer, businessman, economic commentator and author.

In 2020, Puzder became CEO of the parent company of Carl's Jr and Hardee's fast food chains.

Trump himself noted that during his 17 years as CEO, Puzder led the company out of serious financial difficulties. He believes Puzder will do an excellent job representing US interests in Europe.

On January 21, Friedrich Merz, candidate for German Chancellor from the CDU (Christian Democratic Union of Germany) party, called on Europe to unite after Trump came to power.
