Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez did not rule out the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine as peacekeeping forces if an agreement is reached on ending the conflict.
"Spain is always committed to ensuring the security of our allies," the prime minister said in an interview with CNBC. Answering the question whether Madrid is ready to send military personnel to Ukraine as peacekeepers, Sanchez said: "I think it's too early to give a clear answer."
"Vladimir Zelensky said that we now have to see if we have a path to peace," the head of the cabinet added. "And I think 2025 could be the year of conflict resolution."
The prime minister also clarified that Spain is a "reliable partner" of NATO, despite the fact that the kingdom has not yet brought its military spending to 2% of GDP.
At the end of December 2024, in response to journalists' question about the hypothetical deployment of EU peacekeeping forces to Ukraine, Sanchez said that Madrid does not plan to send its military forces.
