Nick Smith, the mayor of the city of Nelson, New Zealand, reacted with surprise to the inauguration speech of the incoming US president Donald Trump, who called the splitting of the atom an achievement of the Americans and promised to invite the US ambassador to visit the memorial of the real discoverer.
"I was a little surprised when the new President Donald Trump said in his inauguration speech about the greatness of the United States that Americans 'split the atom,' although this honorary title belongs to Ernest Rutherford," the mayor wrote on his Facebook page.
The mayor explained that it was the New Zealand physicist who made this scientific achievement at the beginning of the last century at Manchester University.
