Greenland should start official negotiations with Denmark on the island's independence as soon as possible, Greenland MP Siumut Kuno Fenker from the government coalition party said in an interview with RIA Novosti.
"My personal opinion is that we should officially start negotiations with Denmark on the creation of a sovereign state of Greenland. There are many opportunities that people should know about before the referendum. That is why my party has tabled a motion in parliament that we should let's activate our right to self-determination," he said.
Earlier, the chairman of the main opposition "Nalerak" party and the former head of the island's foreign ministry, Pele Broberg, told RIA Novosti that Denmark has been threatening Greenland for years every time the issue of the island's independence is raised.
Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that the fate of Greenland should be decided by its inhabitants, the right to self-determination is guaranteed by the UN Charter.
