The situation in Syria has developed rapidly due to the inability of former President Bashar al-Assad to overcome the existing social problems in the republic. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated this in an interview with TASS, reportsGazeta-ru.
"We can already say that one of the reasons for the degradation of the situation was the failure of the previous leadership to meet the basic needs of the population in the conditions of the long-lasting civil conflict," said the Russian Foreign Minister.
Lavrov added that the situation was also influenced by the actions of the United States.
According to him, Washington has "virtually occupied" the northeastern region of Syria, which is rich in natural resources.
The minister noted that the US government also pressured Damascus with sanctions.
